David was united in marriage on March 18, 1978, to Diane Strothman in Hermosa. After a brief time in California, David moved to Hermosa where he started working construction. After high school, he worked for Western Cattle Company for a short time. He then attended New Underwood High School graduating in 1958. He grew up on the Cheyenne River and attended McMahon rural school in the Folsom area. Bale was born March 20, 1940, in Spearfish, South Dakota, the son of Bartlett and Wilma (Hyde) Bale.
